A recent article on the power of social media that came across our desk reminded us that this whole area of the internet is far from being just the latest trend.
Dr. Monica Diochin, Chair, Department of Business Administration, Gerald Schwartz School of Business, at St. Francis Xavier University wrote about the importance of a business’s online reputation and how its being impacted, positively or negatively, by consumer driven reviews. According to Opinion Research Corp., 84% of respondents said that online reviews influenced their purchase decisions, while Nielsen Co. reported that online reviews are considered second only to personal recommendations as the most trusted form of advertising. Notice that traditional communciations channels are not mentioned?

Whether it’s targeted consumer reviews on sites like TripAdvisor, peer referrals on LinkedIn or individual postings on Facebook and Youtube, business’s need to be aware of who’s talking about them, what they are saying and where they are saying it. More and more businesses are adopting the strategy of introducing social media on their own websites as one way to monitor the pulse of customer reaction to their products and services.
